A World Beyond Missouri: Exploring New Horizons

The heart of my articles is Missouri—a state inspiring me with its blend of rich history, urban charm, and breathtaking natural beauty, and it will always be the foundation of my travel journey.

But every now and then, it’s important to think outside the box—or in this case, beyond the state lines—and dream of exploring the world. Why confine yourself to just one state when the entire world is an open playground waiting to be discovered?

In this article, you’ll find two carefully curated lists of the top five places I dream of visiting someday. These lists are organized by geography: the first highlights domestic destinations outside of Missouri, while the second ventures internationally. While my blogs and soon-to-be vlogs remain deeply rooted in showcasing Missouri’s unique treasures, it’s exciting to step beyond its borders and imagine the possibilities.

This isn’t just a one-off idea—this is the start of a recurring series of articles designed to mix things up and broaden horizons. I plan to release 2–4 posts like this per month, introducing readers to destinations far and wide. This series not only changes the scenery but also ensures the content remains fresh and engaging, avoiding monotony while continuing to inspire exploration.

The destinations span a variety of interests, including history, nature, urban exploration, culinary delights, and spiritual significance. There’s something for everyone, and I’ve made an effort to provide a diverse mix for added variety. So let’s dream big, expand our horizons, and explore what lies beyond the box that is Missouri.

Dreaming Across America: Discovering Domestic Wonders

We will start with my top five destinations in the United States that are outside Missouri. Each one is steeped in history and natural beauty, bringing you up close and personal with the beauty and power of God’s handiwork. While these are my top picks, there are so many other places I dream of visiting. Honorable mentions include Yellowstone (Wyoming), Gettysburg (Pennsylvania), Gatlinburg (Tennessee), Appomattox Courthouse (Virginia), and Shiloh (Tennessee)—all of which I hope to feature in future articles.

1. Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina (Blue Ridge Mountains):

   – This destination offers breathtaking views and a chance to immerse yourself in the rich Scottish heritage that shaped the region. The rugged beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains feels like it’s calling me, and I can’t help but imagine what it would be like to stand at one of its overlooks, taking in the vast expanse of rolling hills. It’s a place where history meets serenity—a perfect escape from the everyday.

2. Mt. St. Helen, Washington:

   – Known for its dramatic volcanic landscape, Mt. St. Helen is a testament to nature’s power and resilience. It’s hard not to be humbled by the thought of standing in a place where the earth once unleashed such force. Nearby Spring Lake offers a quieter, more reflective side to this destination, and I imagine it would balance the intensity of the volcanic terrain beautifully. The eruption that forever changed this landscape happened in 1980—a moment in time that still shapes the area’s story.

3. Missoula, Montana:

   – Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, Missoula is a tranquil haven with pristine rivers, expansive wilderness, and outdoor activities like fly fishing. I’ve dreamed of visiting this spot for years—something about its quiet beauty and the lure of its rivers keeps calling to me. It’s a place that seems perfectly suited for slowing down, connecting with nature, and finding peace in simplicity.

4. Grand Canyon, Arizona:

   – The Grand Canyon is one of those places that feels larger than life—a destination so iconic that its name alone inspires awe. Its vastness defies comprehension, stretching across the horizon as a testament to nature’s power and beauty. I can imagine standing on its edge, the canyon bathed in shifting hues of sunlight, feeling both humbled by its scale and uplifted by its timeless presence. The depth and intricate layers of the canyon seem to tell an ancient story, holding mysteries that inspire reflection and wonder. It’s a place where I imagine losing myself in thought, reminded of how small yet connected we are to the grandeur of creation.

5. Bar Harbor, Maine (Acadia National Park):

   – This coastal town and the surrounding beauty of Acadia National Park have only recently come onto my radar, but the more I learn, the more intrigued I become. I can see myself exploring Bar Harbor’s quaint streets and dramatic landscapes, letting its coastal charm and natural beauty spark my imagination. From its dramatic cliffs to lush forests and vibrant town life, it feels like the kind of place you can lose yourself in for a while—immersing yourself in its history, soaking in the beauty, and uncovering new stories waiting to be told.

Dreaming Globally: Exploring International Marvels

While I’ve highlighted dream destinations across the United States, stepping beyond our borders opens up a world of intrigue and beauty that’s equally captivating. This brings me to my top five international destinations—places that spark my imagination and fill me with curiosity. Scotland and Israel top the list as numbers one and two, offering everything from storied histories to natural wonders. While these five countries call to me, there are others I hope to visit and write about in the future. Honorable mentions include Italy, England, Australia, Greenland, and Norway, each holding its own unique allure and potential for exploration.

1. Scotland:

   – The Highlands are renowned for their rugged landscapes, colorful history, and cultural richness, offering a deep connection to Scotland’s vibrant past. From the stirring events of the Jacobite Rising to the enduring traditions that shape the region, Scotland’s story comes alive through its old castles and enchanting islands, such as the Isle of Skye. The sound of Scottish Gaelic, spoken by a small group of people, feels like it carries the soul of the land, adding an intriguing layer to its charm. I imagine taking a road trip from Edinburgh to Inverness, stopping at landmarks like Ben Nevis, soaking in the beauty and history that surround every turn. Standing on Culloden Moor, where the last battle of the Jacobite Uprising of 1745 took place, I envision reflecting on the decisions of Bonnie Prince Charlie and their devastating impact on Highland culture—a poignant moment steeped in the weight of history and tradition. It’s a place where Scotland’s past feels palpable, leaving an indelible mark on anyone who visits.

2. Israel:

   –  Israel is a land steeped in spiritual and historical significance, offering profound experiences at destinations like Jerusalem and the Sea of Galilee. As a Christian, I imagine standing in these sacred places, where Biblical stories come to life, and feeling a deep connection to my faith. These timeless locations also hold immense appeal for travelers seeking historical depth and natural beauty. Jewish visitors often describe a feeling of coming home, adding to the rich, multilayered culture that sets Israel apart from the rest of the Middle East. The food, I’ve heard, is something truly special—an essential part of the country’s vibrant culture. From nature sites to museums, historic buildings, and archaeological wonders, Israel seems to offer endless opportunities for exploration. I picture myself walking through its ancient streets, soaking in the weight of history all around me, and joining a guided tour to uncover even more of its fascinating stories.

3. Greece:

   – As the cradle of Western civilization, Greece invites visitors to explore Athens’ rich history, iconic architecture, and vibrant culture. From ancient landmarks to bustling streets, it’s a place where history truly comes alive. I can picture myself standing on Mars Hill, gazing at the old-world buildings and reflecting on the philosophical and intellectual advances that originated here. The storied history of Greece, from its mythology to its contributions to modern thought, makes it a destination that feels both inspiring and humbling.

4. Argentina:

   – Argentina is a land of fascinating contrasts, where vibrant culture meets breathtaking landscapes and rich historical depth. I can imagine walking the streets of Buenos Aires, taking in the colorful culture—the vibrant tango rhythms, the lively markets, and the blend of European and local traditions that make the city unique. Its world-renowned culinary traditions, like asado and perfectly grilled steaks, offer unforgettable flavors and a sense of community. With intriguing ties to World War II history, including connections to Germans and the OSS, the predecessor to the CIA, Argentina holds fascinating stories for a history enthusiast like me. Beyond its dynamic cities, the towering Andes, sprawling Pampas, and pristine glaciers of Patagonia offer moments of awe and adventure at every turn. Argentina promises a journey of discovery, with every corner offering a new story or reflection.

5. New Zealand:

   – Renowned for its colorful history and stunning landscapes, New Zealand offers a deep connection to the traditions of the Māori people. Its unique blend of vibrant culture and breathtaking natural beauty is both inspiring and unforgettable. New Zealand also offers incredible opportunities for adventure enthusiasts, from hiking and rafting to bungee jumping and ziplining. I imagine standing amidst its dramatic fjords or exploring its lush forests, feeling like I’ve stepped into a world of pure wonder. There’s so much to see and do here that it feels impossible to capture it all in words—it’s a place that calls to the adventurer in me.
